Standard descriptor 7.1.1: Understand and apply the key principles described in codes of ethics and conduct for the teaching profession.

Standard 7 of the AITSL standards relates to the professionality of teachers in the classroom, amongst colleagues and the community (AITSL, 2017). Teachers are always looked up to by students, parents and communities as people of knowledge who work with children in order to educate Australia’s future (Helterbran, 2008). It is therefore imperative that teachers need to act professional in all aspects of conduct and responsibility.

To reinforce and guide professional conduct, codes of conduct are put in place that set forth ethical standards to the public of what can be expected by the outlined professionals in the workplace (Schwimmer & Maxwell, 2017).

Evidence of my understanding and application of principles described in codes of ethics and conduct are the use of consent forms. The following PDF is a consent form I sent out to the parents

of three students asking consent to use their child’s data and work samples as part of the Graduate Teacher Performance Assessment.

The nature of teaching is heavily revolved around young children which meant I was required to be professional in all areas of work (NSW Department of Education, 2017). In other words, work sensitively with the data and providing a degree of confidentiality. The use of the consent form supports the Australian Catholic University’s placement code of conduct and the NSW Department of Education code of conduct to ensure I am working professionally with the children and using the data correctly.

It allows parents to know who is using their child’s data and build a trust not only between myself and the child but also the parent of the child and the school. To further my demonstration of this standard descriptor, I endeavour to write and personally sign a consent or permission form to be able to send to parents in adherence to the school’s code of conduct and compliance policies.
